Because Yoga works on so many different levels, it has great potential as an effective therapy for conditions such as anxiety, depression, trauma, behavioural challenges, and other social, emotional and mental health issues.
By stimulating the parasympathetic nervous system, increasing brain GABA levels and down-regulating the sympathetic nervous system Yoga helps develop the ability to relax and self-soothe and improves mood as well as self-regulation, emotionally, mentally and physically. Mindfulness has been shown to change neural pathways and decrease the activity of the limbic system which is overactive in people suffering from anxiety and PTSD.
Anya became very interested in mental health as soon as she started her first psychology class in school as a teenager. She first came to Yoga in 1997, through an ante-natal yoga class. In 2003, she discovered Integral Yoga and then attended her first retreat in 2004.
To deepen her understanding of Yoga and her expertise, she undertook specialized training at Special Yoga (a British Wheel of Yoga recognized Centre) and the Minded Institute as well as further training with the Heart of Living Yoga Foundation (an Independent Yoga Network school) where she is now also a teacher trainer.
She has been working privately as well as in special needs schools, referral units and mainstream schools
She’s specialized in working with people with mental health, social and emotional issues, behavioral challenges and also special needs. Her approach is very nurturing, enabling the students to grow self-awareness, physical as well as emotional; to unlock their innate ability to self-soothe and relax; to develop self-esteem through accepting themselves and building confidence.
